EXCESSIVE PERSPIRATION

What is the definition of hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is an imbalance in sweat secretion that is the cause of excessive perspiration. Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating usually affects the underarms, hands and feet.

What is the normal mechanism for sweat secretion?

An elevated body temperature stimulates the sudoriferous glands in the skin, which produce sweat.

What are the causes of excessive perspiration?

  • Primitive hyperhidrosis. This disorder of the sudoriferous glands, due to excessive perspiration of the underarm area (axillary hyperhidrosis), the hands and/or feet (palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis) does not have a known cause.
  • Secondary hyperhidrosis. This usually manifests through generalised excessive or inhabitual localised perspiration.

What are the possible treatments for primitive hyperhidrosis?

  • Botox injections: essentially acts on excessive perspiration of the underarm areas and the forehead.
  • Iontophoresis: essentially acts on excessive perspiration of the hands and feet, however, the treatment is lengthy.
  • Surgical sympathectomy

BOTOX FOR EXCESSIVE PERSPIRATION

For how long has Botox been used as a treatment against excessive sweating?

Since 1994, botulinum toxin (Botox) has been able to help patients suffering from axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive perspiration of the underarm area), hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet and excessive perspiration of the forehead.

What is the mechanism of action of Botox on excessive perspiration?

Type A botulinum toxin blocks the neurotransmitter that stimulates the secretion of sweat through the sudoriferous gland.

What is the effect of Botox on perspiration?

Botox acts effectively on excessive perspiration and unpleasant odours for around 6 months. Botox can therefore treat patients who are suffering from primitive hyperhidrosis, as well as patients who have normal transpiration and who require additional comfort during the summer.

What are the risks of a Botox injection for excessive perspiration?

Type A botulinum toxin does not pose any risk in this indication against excessive perspiration.

What are the contraindications for Botox?

There are numerous contraindications for a Botox (botulinum toxin) injection: pregnancy, breastfeeding, myasthenia gravis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, aminoglycoside medication.

Botox Injection Zones

Botox injections are usually used to limit excessive perspiration on the forehead, underarm area, hands and feet. However, Botox injections can be performed on all areas of the body (torso, etc.)

EXCESSIVE PERSPIRATION OF THE UNDERARM AREA

This is the more frequent indication for Botox injections in order to limit perspiration.

EXCESSIVE PERSPIRATION OF THE HANDS AND FEET

Indication: treatment using Botox for excessive perspiration of the hands and feet is reserved for excessive perspiration that is resistant to other well-tolerated treatments (sympathectomy, inotophoresis).

The risk of a Botox injection in the hands and feet: the risk of a Botox injection could lead to muscle weakness in the hands and feet.

Practicalities of employing Botox injections in the hands and feet:

  • In the clinic as an outpatient or at the Cannes clinic
  • Under locoregional anaesthesia or Kalinox

POST-PROCEDURE EFFECTS OF A BOTOX INJECTIONS

The effect of Botox on excessive perspiration appears after the 2nd day and the effect is optimum after 1 month.
Botox enables an effective reduction of excessive perspiration and unpleasant odours for around 6 months.

THE OTHER INDICATIONS OF BOTOX INJECTIONS
